Guest speaker for class

On Friday, November 15th, fifth-grade students at Lansing Intermediate School had the unique opportunity to learn about water systems directly from a local expert. Jake Kowalewski, Maintenance Director for Corvias Infrastructure Solutions and Lansing Ward 2 City Councilman, visited Mrs. Jessica Kowalewski’s and Mrs. Christina Mills’s classrooms to deliver an engaging presentation. His talk complemented the students’ Mystery Science Lesson, which explored the question, “When you turn on the faucet, where does the water come from?”

Drawing from his extensive experience in the water industry, Mr. Kowalewski explained the intricate processes that bring clean water to homes and communities. He did an excellent job breaking down complex concepts into relatable ideas and answering their questions.

This event was more than just a science lesson—it embodied the district’s Strategic Plan goals. Through its focus on Collaboration & Communication, the district prioritizes partnerships with local professionals and organizations to enhance student learning. Mr. Kowalewski’s visit provided students with a real-world perspective on essential infrastructure, showing the value of community collaboration.

Additionally, the presentation reflected the district’s commitment to the Whole Child Approach to Learning by creating a meaningful career exploration opportunity. By interacting with a professional in a high-demand field, students were introduced to potential career paths and inspired to see the relevance of their studies to future opportunities.

Lansing USD469 extends a tremendous thank you to Mr. Kowalewski for volunteering his time for our students. Events like these not only make learning more engaging but also help students envision their potential to contribute meaningfully to their communities in the future.
