On Thursday, November 7, 2024, Lansing Elementary School (LES) hosted a Veterans Day celebration, “A Salute to Our Veterans,” in partnership with the Lansing Kiwanis and the LES Site Council. This event, held in the LES gym, brought together students, families, and community members to honor and express gratitude to our nation’s veterans.
The program began at 5:00 PM, with a welcome from Dr. Jennifer Kolb, LES Principal, and Mr. Martin Altieri, LIS Principal. The Lansing Kiwanis’ Jim Griffen led the posting of colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sung by LES Interventionist Holly Kane.
The program also featured performances from the Leavenworth JROTC Drum and Bugle Corps and the Cavalry Angels.
A highlight of the evening was a sign language performance by some of our LES second graders, who spent time in the weeks leading up to the event learning and rehearsing “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.” Under the guidance of their teachers—Ms. Mulford, Ms. Robinson, Ms. Sander, Ms. Eilderts, Ms. Dinwiddie, and Ms. Baker—the students dedicated themselves to learning the sign language for each song as a gesture of respect for veterans in attendance.
The evening concluded with a closing message from Jim Griffen and the retrieval of the colors.
In addition to the celebration on November 7, the school district observed Veterans Day as a holiday, allowing staff and students the opportunity to attend the local Veterans Day parade and spend time with family in honor of the day.
We extend our gratitude to the LES Site Council, the Lansing Kiwanis, the Leavenworth JROTC, the Lansing PTA, and all staff and families who helped make this event a memorable occasion.
