Libby Stevenson

This week's Academic Spotlight shines on LES/LIS Art Teacher Libby Stevenson.

The fourth and fifth graders in her classroom are diving into the world of collage art, taking inspiration from the renowned artist Derek Gores. Known for his innovative use of recycled materials to create visually striking pieces, art teachers Libby Stevenson used his style to inspire our intermediate school artists.

The students were tasked with creating collages featuring their favorite food, using a medium of old issues of The University Daily Kansan, the University of Kansas’ daily newspaper. These newspapers were donated by KU’s journalism department and collected by Lansing graduate, Hannah Platt, giving students a hands-on experience in both creativity and sustainability.

“I like this project because it helps to turn trash into treasure. The reason I like art class is because you can be creative and have fun,” said student Izzy Everett.

"“I like this project because I get to see pictures of the KU basketball team on the newspapers,” said student Colton Bullock.

This project teaches students about the importance of recycling materials in art and helps them develop fine motor skills and an appreciation for artistic techniques that stretch beyond traditional mediums.

"It was a fun project, because we got to search for certain colors and we got to tear paper and seeing how they turned out was interesting," said student Everett Shields.

Excellent work, students and Mrs. Stevenson!
