On November 21, 2024, Lansing school leaders joined educators and innovators at Bonner Springs High School for the CRE Professional Learning and Collaboration Day. This forward-thinking event brought together three districts selected for a grant to reimagine classroom teaching and learning through artificial intelligence (AI). Lansing was chosen for this grant because of its proven ability to think outside the box and reimagine what is possible to create the best opportunities for kids. This event marks the beginning of an exciting, transformative journey that will introduce groundbreaking initiatives to Lansing Middle School and Lansing High School.
Representing Lansing were Director of Teaching and Learning Miles Azzeh, Director of Communications and Marketing Sharon Burns, Lansing Middle School Principal Brooks Jenkins, sixth-grade science teachers Amanda Thomas and Alisha Holyfield, Lansing High School science teacher Dr. Anne Krebs, and Counselor Maddie Burtis. Together, they explored how artificial intelligence can enhance student learning and engagement.
The day began with a welcome from Bart Swartz, followed by a presentation by Assistant Research Professor Maggie Mosher. The presentation, "Innovative Education: Using AI to Foster Student Engagement and Achievement," provided insights into how AI is already reshaping classrooms and inspired attendees to think creatively about integrating technology into their teaching practices.
In the afternoon, participants developed action plans for integrating AI tools in their classrooms. Lansing's delegation proposed ideas for middle and high school pilots, focusing on enhancing science instruction, personalized learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The district is committed to exploring how AI can support its strategic goals of Collaboration & Communication and Whole Child Learning. With guidance from industry experts and peer districts, Lansing is poised to lead the way in preparing students for a technology-driven future.
Stay tuned for updates as Lansing's educators and students embark on this exciting new chapter in education!
