This week's academic spotlight shines on first-year Lansing Middle School math teacher Josie Nelson and the engaging activity she did with her 6th graders! To help her students master one-step equations, Ms. Nelson swapped out traditional worksheets for a fun scavenger hunt, and her kids absolutely loved it.
As part of this hands-on review, students roamed around the room (and even into the hallway) solving math problems on task cards. Each answer led them to the next clue, turning a typical and routine math lesson into a fun-filled hunt.
According to Ms. Nelson, the activity serves as a built-in self-assessment tool. If a student couldn’t find their answer on the next task card, they knew something was off—and that prompted them to go back, revise, and try again. She also loved how the activity allowed her to move freely around the room and check in with students as needed. “It’s a fun and active way to practice math,” she shared, “instead of just sitting at a desk.”
What’s especially impressive is that Josie is doing all of this in her very first year of teaching. Her ability to create meaningful, student-centered learning experiences—combined with her classroom management and positive energy—shows skills that many don’t master until they reach veteran status.
Not only was it apparent the students were loving the activity, but their quotes also show just how much they enjoy Ms. Nelson and her class.
“The scavenger hunt was fun because we got to move around and do it with friends. It helped me learn without just sitting in a chair,” said Beckett See.
“It was fun looking for the answers in hidden places! Even though the work is hard, I know Miss Nelson gives us homework because it helps us. Her positive attitude makes class fun,” said Jocelyn Nevarez.
“Miss Nelson is the best math teacher. Her class actually makes sense to me. If you’re in her class, you’ll love it!” said Kelsey Brown.
My favorite quote came from AvaRae DeMateo:
“Ms. Nelson’s positivity helps me grow. Her teaching helps me learn without getting frustrated.”
Thank you, Ms. Nelson, for creating a classroom that blends challenge, energy, and fun. We’re lucky to have you on our team here in Lansing!
