Jessica James, Social/Behavioral Skills Teacher
Question: How long have you worked in Lansing USD469?
Answer: This is my 8th year in the district. I started out as a para working in both early childhood and at the elementary school. I became a long term sub at New Beginnings and have been in this position since LIS opened.
Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?
Answer: I am a proud Texan, I have 6 kids (two actually work in the district), lots of pets, and I love working at LIS. My role is primarily to help kiddos who have a hard time dealing with their feelings. I try to teach them skills and strategies that will help them learn how to manage their emotions and behaviors.
Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?
Answer: I love that my day is never boring! I also love seeing students use the strategies that we have worked so hard on. It is so cool to see how my students grow over time.
Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Answer: I love hanging out with my husband and family. Watching movies, trying new restaurants, and hiking are some of my most favorite things to do.
Question: What is something unusual about you that most people don't know?
Answer: I wanted to be a barrel racer when I was little. I love going to the rodeo.
Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?
Answer: Anytime I run into a former student and they say hello is heartwarming for me. I have to work with these kiddos during some pretty stressful times. To know that I ended up being a good memory for them is nice.
Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?
Answer: Don't stress the small stuff. Work hard, be kind, and know that people care about you and are here to help.
