Lansing USD 469 is proud to highlight the exceptional achievements of our January Students of the Month. These individuals have gone above and beyond to make a difference in our schools and community.
Student of the Month: Bayne Yoakam
Bayne Yoakam, a junior at Lansing High School, embodies what it means to lead by example this school year. Nominated by a staff member, Bayne was described as someone who has been "nothing short of extraordinary." She had this to say about him:
"Bayne has gone above and beyond to help with the Debate program in the classroom. I have been the long-term substitute while the district works to find a permanent debate and skills communication teacher. Bayne has spent practically every day in the debate classroom teaching and mentoring new debate students who have joined the class this year.
Since the beginning of the school year, these students have not had a dedicated debate teacher, and Bayne has stepped up to fill the gap. He has worked tirelessly with administration, teachers, and his peers to ensure the program continues to thrive. Bayne has shown incredible leadership skills and teaching initiative.
By definition, he exemplifies initiative: 'the capacity to judge what needs to be done and take action, especially without being prompted by others,' as defined by the Cambridge English Dictionary. I have been so impressed by his ability to connect with younger students in a way they can relate to, ensuring they experience the thrills and challenges of the debate program that he knows and loves. The district is blessed to have students like Bayne who are willing to step up like this every day to make our school great!"
Congratulations, Bayne, and thank you for your remarkable leadership and dedication to the Lansing High School Debate program!

Our second Student of the Month, Sophie Kurz, is another shining example of excellence at Lansing High School. Described by a peer as someone who "goes above and beyond every student" and is "amazing in her sports and academic fields," she continues to impress with her talent and dedication.
In the classroom, Sophie maintains impeccable grades, reflecting her commitment to academic success and her drive to always do her best. Outside of school, she excels in athletics, demonstrating the discipline and leadership skills that make her a standout both on and off the field.
Her ability to balance academics and sports with such excellence sets her apart as a role model to her peers. Congratulations, Sophie, on being named our January Student of the Month!
