Tyler Hays, Lansing Elementary School Assistant Principal

Question: How long have you worked for Lansing USD469?

Answer:  This is my eighth year in the district

Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?

Answer: I have been married to my wife Laura for 2 years and we have a 7 month old named Benny. We also have a 4 year old golden doodle named Bucky. This is my second year as an assistant principal at the elementary school. I have had the privilege of working at LES, LIS, and LMS during my time in this district. I have worked with some great staff, students, and families in this district. My current role allows me to interact with a wide range of students and staff on a daily basis. I am there to help if a kiddo is having a hard time and to help them process. I also am here to support and assist staff in any way that I can.

Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?

Answer: I enjoy getting to work with all the staff, students, and families here at LES. This job keeps me on my toes, but I love forming positive relationships and helping students succeed.

Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

Answer: Reading, video games, or hanging out with families

Question:  What is something unusual about you that most people don't know?

Answer: I was a cameraman for a news station at one point.

Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?

Answer: Getting to see former students come to the elementary school to observe and start their journey into education has been amazing. Seeing them all grown up and being successful has been heartwarming for me.

Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?

Answer: To steal from Ted Lasso and Walt Whitman: "Be curious, not judgmental". Also the fact that we all have bad days, but you can still succeed in anything you put your mind to.
