Art Student with Art

On April 18th, students from the Lansing High School fine art program traveled to Highland Community College to participate in the 42nd Highland Art Day.  The Highland Art Day is a competitive exhibition designed to recognize artistic talent at the senior high level (grades 9-12) within the region. The Art Day experience is an excellent opportunity for students and art educators to view the creative efforts of their contemporaries and colleagues.

Invitations for Art Day were sent to regional schools in both Kansas and Missouri.  Each school was limited to 30 works of art for competition, and this year, the Highland Art Day featured works from 45 different Kansas/Missouri high schools.  Six hundred fifteen regional high school students attended and presented 1,219 works of art.  Lansing High School featured 30 works of art from the following students: Gwynevere Buie, November Bullard, Samantha Terry, Dahlia Cox, Riley Lagunas, Hannah Cook, Elizabeth Cook, Eva Kuhn, Emma Yates, Anne Vodarick, Lillian Francis, Adrian Escalante, Haven Kane, Alexis Patton, Sean Smith, Jackson Jackson, and Nico Rodriguez.

For the art competition, the college selected a panel of three judges.  The judges consisted of former art educators and professional artists. The judges were tasked with analyzing all student work and selecting a few for awards.  The selected few were awarded within the following categories; Best of Show, Artistic Excellence, Honorable Mention.

These Lansing High School students were selected by the judges for the following awards:

  • Best of Show - Gwynevere Buie, Mixed Media Painting. Lillian Francis, Mixed Media Sculpture.

  • Artistic Excellence - Gwynevere Buie, Mixed Media Painting. Riley Lagunas, Ceramic Pottery. Eva Kuhn, Mixed Media Landscape. Adrian Escalante, Mixed Media Still Life.

  • Honorable Mention - Dahlia Cox, Ceramic Pottery. Emma Yates, Mixed Media Portrait. Haven Kane, Mixed Media Still Life.

Congratulations to all the artists who competed!
